CLP & SAFETY (EN15494) Guidelines

WHAT IS CLP?

With the introduction of CLP labels for ‘mixtures’ in June 2015, candles will now need to inform customers of chemical hazards inherent within the candle. In addition to this, EN15494 provides some standardised fire safety warnings that most manufacturers choose to include, communicating perhaps the greatest risk posed by a candle. This document includes all of the pictograms likely to be required on a candle or diffuser. The document can be edited in Adobe Illustrator etc or the components can simply be ‘cut’ and ‘pasted’ into other applications.

CLP Pictograms for home fragrance products

The above pictograms have transparent backgrounds, making them ideal for use on labels where multiple pictograms are required. All pictograms has to be a minimum or 10mm in width and height.

Please refer to Section 2 of the safety data sheet (SDS) for the product for the information required on the label.

The below 5 symbols/text are deemed as mandatory

MSDS / SDS (MATERIAL) safety data sheet

The only Section of an SDS that requires attention is 2.2.

This is the condensed information that is required for the label or packaging.

!! IMPORTANT !!

Please ensure that the SDS have been created to the correct dilution rates.

For example 10% dilution for candles & 20% for the diffusers.

Depending on the dilution rates different warnings & statements may be required even for the same fragrance.

WHERE AND HOW TO USE THE CLP & EN15494

CLP states that the information should be visible when the product is set down for normal use. The label on a candle >125g should also be 76mm x 52mm minimum.

Below are examples of the where and how the CLP & EN15494 should be used for different formats of candles, diffusers & room sprays.

EXAMPLE #1 - CANDLE WITH SEPARATE PACKAGING

Product Packaging

The candle requires only EN15494 safety symbols. This generally referred to as a burn label and applied to the base of the candle.

Candle Label

The box requires only the CLP information on it. This information can either be on a label if the packaging of box is the same for different fragrances in you range.

EXAMPLE #2 - CANDLE WITH NO PACKAGING

In this situation the candle container will require a label that contains both the EN15494 the CLP information on it.

EXAMPLE #3 - CANDLE WITH NO PACKAGING - SQUARE SHAPE

In this situation the candle container will require a label that contains both the EN15494 the CLP information on it.

EXAMPLE #4 - DIFFUSER WITH PACKAGING

EN15494 symbols are not required for diffusers so only the CLP are required on the visible part of the product

EXAMPLE #5 - All OF THE ABOVE ON A COLOURED BACKGROUND
